During the height of COVID, in March of 2020, Luke and Bailey Fiegl found out they were pregnant for the first time and later found out they were having identical twin boys. It was truly a surprise of a lifetime! An identical twin pregnancy required more appointments with high risk doctors and the pandemic made everything more complicated, but they were so excited to bring two precious boys into this world and they would do anything for them!
Heading into their 16 week high-risk appointment, everything spun out of control. The twins had developed a severe case of Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome, which had caused one of the babies' brains not to develop properly. It was a very urgent situation and they were transferred to a higher level of care at a Fetal Care Center for next steps to try and save the babies. The next few weeks were full of many doctors appointments, fear, confusion, sadness, and so much unknown. At 18 weeks after an emergency in utero surgery, Luke and Bailey lost one of their babies. They were learning how to grieve the loss of one life, while celebrating the life of their surviving twin.
Fast forward to 25 weeks, Bailey went into preterm labor and delivered the surviving twin, Riggins, along with his sleeping brother, Rhett. Riggins weighed 1 lb 14 oz and was a fighter the moment he entered this world. They spent the next 114 days sitting by their son's side, watching him fight for his life in the NICU. At almost 4 months old, Riggins was finally well enough to leave the NICU and go home.
While Luke and Bailey thought they had been through the hardest parts of their journey already, they soon realized that coming home was not near what they were imagining. Bringing home a high needs child with lots of therapies and doctors appointments, was another level of hard. Luke and Bailey had the most incredible support system in the world, through family and friends, and even then, they felt the loneliest they had ever been. As much as people wanted to support and love them through the hard times, very few people actually understood what they were going through… and this is how Little Legacies came to be! Just a mom and a dad who experienced the highest of highs and the lowest of lows just trying to bring their children into this world. Just a mom and a dad wanting to help others not feel so alone in their complicated pregnancies, NICU journeys and beyond!
